Final White Scars Army List

So, boys and girls, the time has come to post my final army list.

Throne of Skulls is but two weeks away, and I've been furiously painting my miniatures by night and tweaking my army list like a pair of over-ripe nipples by day. The result, as you may gather, is pretty sexy.

I've yet to test game any of these builds, and I very much doubt I'll have time to, as every moment I don't spend at work or in the gym is given over to carefully painting my bare undercoated, and unassembled army.

Is it possible to paint all of this in one week, without making my army look like an impressionist's fuzzy doodle, or having a nervous breakdown? We shall see.

Here's my list at present, with a few variations.

Captain w/ bike, relic blade, artificer armour - 180
Rune priest w/bike, axe, wolf tooth talisman - 140
5 grey hunters, w/razorback, plasma gun - 125
5 grey hunters, w/razorback, plasma gun - 125
4 bikes, 2 melta guns, multi-melta attack bike - 185
4 bikes, 2 plasma, attack bike - 185
5 long fangs, 4 missiles - 115
Aegis w/quad gun - 100
Vindicator - 115
Vindicator - 115
Vindicator - 115

The idea here is to largely split my army in two, with the rune priest hanging back in the plasma (fire support) squad and the captain offering a bit of melee boost for the melta guys, should it be needed.

The rune priest will be taking the divination deck, in most games, and jaws when I'm playing against Necrons.

I opted for an aegis rather than a bastion, as models can sometimes get too grouped on the battlements, although the bastion does give better line of sight.

The vindicators will get cover from the bikes and the razors. The grey hunters will grab objectives.

Let me know what you think!

  1. The list looks pretty feisty.

I would have preferred larger squads of SWs myself as they are an awesome troop choice, but then you would have to cut out some toys.

Have you looked into a thunder fire cannon for longer range, ignoring cover, and anti-horde? You can shave a few points off there.

I look forward to seeing all the conversions and painting you have completed!

    1. Thanks man! I'll post a bit more in the days to come. Hope the wedding went well. You got any honeymoon planned?

I do have three thunderfires, as I was initially planning on spamming them (after reading some of your tacticas about them).

Another option I was considering for this list was in dropping the long fangs, getting the ghunters on the quad, using the points left over for a thunderfire. How would you rate it against long fangs?

I was also considering getting a pair of double heavy flamer landspeeders for Guard blobs behind aegis lines.

    2. Not yet, but all this week we are relaxing and taking small trips around the area. It is not a tropical vacation by any means, but it has been really fun.

Anyways, the long fangs and the thunderfire fulfill 2 completely different roles. While they have the same amount of blast templates (if you are firing frags) the damage output against infantry is significantly different. However, krak missiles are awesome anti-tank. So you need to ask yourself what are you missing in your list and go from there.

Secondly, I am a little concerned that you have too many blast templates. As of now, you have three vindicators and the long fang squad. People are going to spread out like no tomorrow to avoid all of those templates, minimizing their impact. Lets not forget that you can not overwatch/snapfire those shots either. That is the reason why I have not adopted using more then 2 tfcs. Perhaps consider a predator with autocannons and heavy bolters or even a rifle dred (I know it is against the fluff). Another option for just quantity of shots would be dual heavy bolter speeders or heavy bolter attack bikes.

I am not sure about the double heavy flamer speeders. A) you have to get close on a fragile platform and B) A thunderfire can fulfill the same role (at ap 6 instead of ap 4) at longer range. With that being said, I have been working with another WS player about taking sternguard in a drop pod with heavy flamers and combi-meltas. It is a reliable delivery method and you fulfill two roles perfectly.

In regards to the quad gun, you could put telion on there from a scout squad and knock stuff out like no tomorrow!

1500 points is tricky as WS have a harder time covering all of their bases. The current list you have does do a pretty good job in accomplishing that goal however.

    3. This is all very, very helpful. Thanks for taking the time to reply!

I've bashed out a couple of alternatives. Let me know what you think. I've tried to put a couple of riflemen dreads in each list. I've never used them before, but the internets say they are good.

Is there any better combination than the units I've got here?

      Thanks man!

Captain, bike, power sword - 150
      Rune priest, bike - 135
10 Grey Hunters, 2 x plasma, drop pod, mark of the wulfen - 210
      5 scouts, w/ Telion - 125

      aegis - 100
      2 x rifle dreads - 250
      thunderfire - 100
      double h.bolter landspeeder - 60

  2. I actually kind of like this list the best

Captain, bike, power sword - 150
    Rune priest, bike - 135
10 Grey Hunters, 2 x plasma, drop pod, mark of the wulfen - 210
    5 scouts, w/ Telion - 125
    4 bikes, 2 melta, mm attack bike - 185
    4 bikes, 2 plasma, attack bike - 185
    aegis - 100
    2 x rifle dreads - 250
    thunderfire - 100
    double h.bolter landspeeder - 60

However, I would make a couple of suggestions

Foremost, I would probably give the GH squad melta guns. Plasma guns are nice, but you need guaranteed vehicle kills on the drop. Likewise you can fire them an assault the next turn.

Second, I am not sure a single speeder is going to accomplish much.

Third, instead of mark of the wolfen, why not take a banner? It allows you to re-roll all ones for a single assault phase. This includes, overwatch, charge distance, hits, wounds, saves, and leadership checks. Well worth the 10 points.

I would consider giving your commander a better close combat weapon and some artificer armor. Having that 2+ save and a nastier close combat weapon allows him to chew through squads by himself.

    What do you think?

    1. Hey,

Thanks for this - all great advice. The original idea for Mark of the Wulfen is the AP2 rending attacks, plus the D6 extra. They're beasts in combat!

That said, I've been back and forth about drop pods for a while now, and have decided against them. The problem is that they leave your army a little too spread out. With such a small model count like I already have, the key to success I guess is in having each unit support the other.

The list I've been toying with is a minor variation of the original list. I'm keeping the vindis, primarily to deal with stuff like nob bikers, and also to act as a fire magnet.

The razorbacks will be there to guard the flanks of the vindis and also be a mobile shield for the bike squads. The army will largely split into two wings, with the captain and the melta guys darting in close to the enemy to pick off transports, and the rune priest and plasma dudes staying out of charge range, 'jawsing' things.

I've basically just taken out the fangs and the aegis and replaced them with rifledreads. The problem with the aegis is that it encourages a kind of static, defensive game, which doesn't really suit the rest of my army. Plus it's utility is limited if I don't run into any flyers.

In games against flyer-heavy armies, I'll bless the rifle dreads with divination powers and they could be a neat anti-air unit. Of course, there's no interceptor, but you can't have it all your own way.

What do you think? Do you think aegis + long fangs, for riflemen is a decent swap?

      Captain, bike, relic blade, a.armour - 180
      Rune priest, bike - 135
      5 Grey Hunters, melta, razorback - 120
      5 Grey Hunters, razorback - 115
      4 bikes, 2 melta, mm attack bike - 185
      4 bikes, 2 plasma, attack bike - 185
      thunderfire - 100
      vindicator - 115
      vindicator - 115
      2 x rifledreads - 250

    2. I do like rifle dreds. I am currently running a pair in my 1850 list. However, keep in mind that you can't re-roll a re-roll. Those autocannons are twin linked so divination powers are kinda pointless for them.

Best of luck at the tournament! Be sure to shoot me an e-mail and let me know how you do. Also, I want to see pictures!!!!
